Day M51: Mystery Island

17.11.11:

How could one not love a place called Mystery Island? An uninhabited island located in the very south of Vanuatu, this tiny dot of land is believed to be haunted and so living here is taboo. Why is it haunted? Well I guess that’s the mystery of Mystery Island. Although the Ghost of Christmas Past doesn’t stop us tourists stomping all over the place (and it didn’t stop the Yanks building an airstrip that takes up half the island). Again we took to the launches and to step foot in the 187th country of The Odyssey Expedition was a sheer joy. I hung out on the island with my new cruise chums Stef and Crystal and did the usual stuff one does on mysterious islands…

Drink kava out of a coconut shell…

Fend off the local warriors…

Bring out the dancing girls…

Hang out at the Dharma Initiative airport…

And almost get eaten by cannibals…

True story.

Incidentally, if you would like to hire Mystery Island for the day it only costs about $50. Bargain!

  1. So I’ve been reading this blog starting from day 1 (I started last month, though) and I find it really interesting. It’s been a great read so far, but only one thing bugs me:

    Lack of pictures.

I don’t mean in all the posts, just posts like this one, where the links are broken and images don’t show up anymore.

I know it’s 2013 and this was written 2 years ago, but is there any chance those could be fixed, please?
Thanks for the great read. And congrats on the world records!

    1. Hi Carlos, sorry yes, you’re right!! The problem is that Facebook changed all of its picture URLs about six months ago and I have over 600 broken links to fix one by one (sussing out which pics they were is a nightmare!). I will do it but it’s a mammoth task. I blame Bono.

      1. I’ve just finished reading all of the posts. Again, GREAT read. You’ve made me want to travel around the world (but flying -for now-, because I absolutely love airplanes.)

Now, for the broken links problem, since your site uses WordPress, might I suggest using a database string search tool (like this one: http://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/ — it’s free) to help you fix the incorrect URLs? (When moving WP sites from one domain to another, this kind of tool is a must.)

        To help you out:

        URLs with fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/ don’t work.

        URLs with fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/ work.

Find/replace former with latter. Just tried it with all of the pictures in this post. Works perfectly.

In any case, I probably don’t need to remind you to backup your database just in case you do decide to do it.

Well, best of luck! I’ve already subscribed to and will continue reading your other blog.
        Greetings from Mérida, Venezuela.
